High-risk obstetrics
Some pregnancies need closer surveillance because of maternal health, pregnancy history, fetal concerns or complications that develop along the way. High-risk care means anticipating those needs and coordinating the right expertise.
Written by Dr Amber Aggrwal, MCh Reproductive Medicine (Hewitt Fertility Centre, Liverpool), DNB Obstetrics & Gynaecology. GMC 7724289 · Punjab Medical Council 43124 · Haryana Medical Council HN013500. Last reviewed: September 2026.
Who may need additional care
This can include pregnancy after fertility treatment, recurrent pregnancy loss, multiple pregnancy, diabetes, hypertension, thyroid or autoimmune disease, placental concerns, previous preterm birth, or a history of major obstetric complications.
Coordinated planning
Care may involve maternal-fetal medicine, anaesthesia, neonatology, physicians or other specialists. The plan is individual and changes as the pregnancy progresses.
Urgent concerns
Severe pain, heavy bleeding, breathlessness, reduced fetal movement or other urgent pregnancy symptoms need immediate assessment by your maternity unit or emergency service—not an online enquiry.
Clinical review
This newly drafted patient information requires Dr Amber Aggrwal's review and is not a substitute for antenatal care.
